The Archiepiscopal Chateau is located in Kromeriz, one of the most attractive towns in Moravia, and is the most popular visitor attraction of
the historic grounds, which also includes two surrounding gardens. The chateau and gardens were added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1998.
The history of the chateau is inseparable from the history of the Olomouc bishopry and archbishopry. When the original Gothic-Rennaisance castle was destroyed by Swedish troops in the Thirty years´ War, Bishop Karl II Von Lichtenstein-Kastelkorn decided to construct a spectacular Early-Baroque palace that reflected the social, political and cultural significance of Olomouc Bishops. Designed by Italian architects Filiberto Lucchese and Giovanni Pietro, the palace also reflects its Italian influence.
Today, the chateau is not only a unique historic object, but an active research centre that holds precious collections of paintings, books and music, based on the zealous research and antiquary work of scholars throughout the centuries.
