The castle was built by Bolko I, Duke of Świdnica and Jawor, at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

In the 16th century, Matthias von Logau reconstructed the stronghold in the Renaissance style and fortfied it, adapting it to artillery defence.

The 30-year war and a fire in 1689 added to the castle's destruction.

During the whole 19th century, conservation works were carried out here. The castle occupies the highest part of the steep hill at Lake Bystrzyckie. The entrance leads through a gate donjon with an iron harrow, secured with a drawbridge across the dry moat.

Renaissance attics and scratchwork decorations have survived. In the castle, there is a small museum. A special attraction is walking up the tower, from which one can look at the beautiful view on the Sowie Mountains and Bystrzyckie Lake.
