The Terezín Memorial was established in 1947, on the initiative of the government of the newly restored Czechoslovakia, at the site of the suffering of tens of thousands of people, originally as the Memorial of National Suffering. It is the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its mission is to preserve the memory of the victims of racial and political persecution during the Nazi occupation, to develop museum, research, and educational activities, as well as to care for the sites associated with the suffering and deaths of tens of thousands of victims of a regime of violence.

The Memorial complex consists of:

  • The Small Fortress as the historical part of Terezín,

  • The National Cemetery,

  • The Ghetto Museum,

  • The Jewish Cemetery with a crematorium and the Russian Cemetery,

  • The Soviet Soldiers’ Memorial,

  • A commemorative plaque at the former railway siding,

  • The memorial site by the Ohře River,

  • The Columbarium with part of the fortifications, ceremonial rooms, and the morgue,

  • The former underground factory Richard in Litoměřice with a crematorium,

  • The former Magdeburg Barracks.
